Economic Regulation

Economic Regulation is at the centre of the water industry in England and Wales.  After the water sector was privatised in the late 1980s, water supply and sewerage services were provided to all customers by private companies.  In order to sustain and improve the essential nature of those services, while protecting customers' interests, the Government set up an independent economic regulator (now known as the Water Services Regulation Authority or Ofwat) which ensures that the water sector operates to the appropriate standards and charges the appropriate prices for its services.  Further information may be found on Ofwat's website www.ofwat.gov.uk.

Many of our activities are also governed by other regulators including the Environment Agency (www.environment-agency.gov.uk), the Drinking Water Inspectorate (www.dwi.gov.uk), and by watchdogs such as the Consumer Council for Water (www.ccwater.org.uk).

In this part of the website are key regulatory submissions including price control documents, water resources and drought plans, and information on competition.
